Are Boon boxing gloves suitable for both training and sparring?

For beginners or general training, use the following chart as a guideline based on your body weight:

• Under 100 lbs (45 kg): 6–10 oz
• 100–150 lbs (45–68 kg): 10–12 oz
• 150–175 lbs (68–80 kg): 12–14 oz
• Over 175 lbs (80 kg): 14–16 oz

It’s common to have different sized gloves for different training purposes. For heavy bag and pad work, 10 – 12oz are typically used, while for sparring 14-16oz are used. Having more padding can reduce impact and help absorb blows when blocking punches, while the extra weight slows punches.

Smaller people may spar lightly in 12oz gloves, while for others these are too small. Some gyms nominate what sized gloves can be used for sparring, so this is something you may want to check.

For amateur competition 10oz gloves are used for Light Flyweight to Light Welterweight and Welterweight through to Heavyweight uses 12oz gloves. For professional competition the lace up 8oz are used up to 147lbs (67kg) and 10oz for sizes above that.

It’s important to wear hand wraps when training and this needs to be taken into account when trying on gloves.
